Rehyphen

From Forgotten Waste to Beautiful Memories

Cassette tapes may feel like an item from a bygone era but Rehyphen® are using the past to rewrite the future, rescuing discarded tapes from the scrap heap and upcycling them to create a whole new type of music. With nearly 50 million tons of electronic waste generated in 2018, and just 20 percent of that waste recycled, this Singapore-based social enterprise creates a new universal musical language and rewrites the waste story to embrace a circular economy.

Offering exceptional quality and unique fabric and map posters and accessories woven from e-waste and cassette tapes, their diverse and adventurous collections look good and do good with insightful, high-end products are designed to inspire a global community, create a cleaner planet and give consumers a platform to engage with the future of luxury through meaningful collections.

Ready, Cassette, Go

When you choose to purchase from Rehyphen® and One Good Thing, you are creating new memories from old materials while making a positive impact on the planet through exceptional products. You will enjoy unique home accessories designed using the brand’s signature MusicCloth®, an innovative upcycled material made of discarded cassette tapes and video tapes.

In turn, you will be secure in the knowledge that your purchase is supporting an organisation committed to increasing awareness of upcycling both in Rehyphen®’s native Singapore and on a wider scale. 100% of proceeds support programs for saving e-waste and nonbiodegradable plastic from landfill and 10% of proceeds are given to UN foundations to create a better world.

Each product is handwoven using traditional techniques and felting needles for an exquisite basket weave pattern and the highest quality  stability and durability. You will receive a personalised product with unique colour combinations and patterns and the original album name written onto the material. Every Rehyphen®  purchase supports the move towards a conscious and zero waste global community that truly appreciates the beauty of upcycling and is willing to lead positive change.

“We weave our music; we replay our cassette tapes.”

The very first notes for Rehyphen® were played years ago, inspired by the need to communicate with friends in faraway places. In a time before smartphones and social media had been invented, Rehyphen® co-founder Jessica and her friend used tapes to record messages and share music with one another.

After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York and completing a fellowship with a zero waste pattern fashion designer, we fast forward to 2016 when Jessica unearthed the original cassette tapes. Along with her mother and inspired by a quote from Alvar Aalto that says, “Nothing old is ever reborn but neither does it totally disappear,” Jessica determined to make waste into something beautiful and preserve memories in a new way befitting the 21st century world.

After nine months spent perfecting their weaving technique, the first Rehyphen® product was launched.  Through partnerships with government organisations including the Singapore Art Museum and The Art House, the company has run workshops to increase awareness of upcycling, sustainable design and global e-waste in a fun, meaningful way with hands-on experiences. Since 2016, the brand has continued to go from strength to strength with MusicCloth voted into the Material ConneXion library in New York Library and exhibited at TEDx. Thread after thread, Rehyphen® have truly woven trash into treasure.
